Synopsis:

Rabbit Ears' "Red Riding Hood" and "Goldilocks" are based on the original Brothers Grimm fairy tales, not the sugarcoated tales popular in modern times. Adapted by Tom Roberts, these classic stories benefit from some new twists and a good measure of added humor.

Meg Ryan's enthusiastic narration showcases her storytelling talents and is accompanied by wonderful drawings by Laszlo Kubinyi and effective, original music by Art Lande. In "Red Riding Hood," Red is enticed deep into the woods by the Wolf's suggestion that Grandmother might enjoy a bouquet of wildflowers with her bread and sweets. The wolf then proceeds to eat Red and her Grandmother in a single gulp.

The words here are graphic, but the pictures (thankfully) leave the gory details to the viewer's imagination. In this version, the Woodsman rescues Red and Grandmother by slitting open the wolf's stomach and pulling the pair out; then he fills the wolf's stomach with rocks. He leaves Grandmother's house with an added bonus--a new fur coat.

"Goldilocks" evinces a more liberal rewriting--she's depicted as a headstrong, extremely spoiled child who lives in the Deep South. Folksy Southern accents and slang abound. For instance, Goldilocks heads into the woods and "takes off like a jackrabbit in coyote country." Other minor language changes, such as "the big bowl of porridge, the sorta big bowl, and the not big at all bowl" lend a folksy, casual feel to a traditional tale.

In this version, Goldilocks and the bears grow from their interaction with one another--Goldilocks stops her stubborn ways and becomes an obedient child, and the three bears learn to lock their door. Like all the videos in the award-winning Rabbit Ears series, this pairing is a wonderful presentation of two cherished, classic tales.

THIS IS NOT A DVD!!! THIS IS A 12" LASERDISC AND WILL NOT PLAY IN A DVD PLAYER
