Synopsis:

The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score.

A triumph at every level, West Side Story sets the ageless tale of Romeo and Juliet against the backdrop of New York City gang warfare in the late 1950's. The melodic Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim score ("Maria." "America," "Tonight") and Jerome Robbins' exuberant choreography are women into a skillful mix of realism and fantasy that casts an enduring spell.

Natalie Wood plays Maria, whose first taste of love is blighted by the vicious rivalry of two street gangs - the Jets and the Sharks - one Anglo, one Puerto Rican. Along with Richard Beymer as her devoted lover Tony, the gifted young cast also features Rita Moreno and George Chakiris, both Oscar winners for Best Supporting Actress and Actor. Garnering a total of 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, West Side Story clearly set a standard that remains unsurpassed in movie musicals. It will forever be a feast for the eye, the ear and, unquestionably, the heart.

This movie delivers all. Romance, fun, humor, drama, etc. I mean, true, there's nothing worse then a dancing gang. But... this is an awesome movie. You can't help but get up and rewind the movie to learn the excellent dance moves. You can't help but resist to cry when Tony dies. You can't help but sing to every song.

THIS IS NOT A DVD!!! THIS IS A 12" LASERDISC AND WILL NOT PLAY IN A DVD PLAYER
